Helmet Materials
Have you ever wondered what goes into the making of your helmet? The materials used for making a helmet are very crucial to the safety of the motorcycle rider if and when he meets with an accident. Helmet materials are the heart of the helmet. They determine the quality or the lack of it of the helmet. Helmet materials make or mar a helmet. They are, hence, heavily researched before use and often conform to the highest quality standards. However, there have been cases of low quality and degraded helmet materials being used in helmets. Such helmets are often useless when they are needed the most. Such helmets do not provide adequate protection and hence are of no use. The wearer of such helmets often loses his life in any accident in which he is involved. Materials Used In The Making Of A Helmet And Their Uses A helmet can be dissected to get a view into what goes into the making of the helmet, i.e. the helmet materials. The primary part of any helmet, the body which protects the skull, is the area which is emphasized upon most by helmet manufacturers. This part of the helmet can be made from different helmet materials. The primary material used conventionally in preparing this part of a helmet has been plastic. Plastic, especially the hard variety, has been conventionally used to make this body of a helmet. Plastic is easy to mould and fairly good at absorbing shocks. Hence, it is used to prepare that part of the helmet which takes the maximum beating during an accident. However, plastic is not a very good material for the manufacture of helmets and is being gradually taken over carbon fiber. Carbon fiber helmets do away with most of the shortcomings of plastic. Hence this helmet material is now being preferred over plastic. The other helmet materials used in the making of a helmet are foam and fiber glass. Foam is used to make the inside cushioning of a helmet. It is this cushion which actually protects a motorcycle rider from the perils of road accidents. Foam cushions absorb the shock of the impact and leave the riders head almost unaffected. The rider’s life is thus saved. Another important material used in the making of a helmet is the fiber glass. Fiber glass is used to make the windshield of the helmet. Fiberglass is used in place of normal glass as fiber glass develops cracks on impact with a hard substance but does not break. Thus the rider is saved from the glass splinters which would have otherwise harmed him.
